837P and CMS-1500 are related, not identical
The CMS-1500 is a paper professional claim form. An 837P is a structured X12 electronic transaction used for professional claims. Many data concepts correspond, but the workflows, formatting rules, validation, and submission steps are different.
What the software does
CMS-1500 Electronic Claim Software lets you prepare professional claim information in a Windows workflow and create an 837P Version 5010A1 file. The software creates the file; it does not transmit claims directly.
What happens next
After the file is created, submit it using the payer, clearinghouse, Medicare contractor, billing service, or other electronic connection your organization uses. The receiver may return acknowledgment files that report transaction or claim status.
