CMS tells billers to check individual payer reimbursement policy for these codes. A POS code can be valid but still be wrong for a particular service, payer, benefit, or claim.

What is a Place of Service code?

CMS maintains two-digit Place of Service codes for professional claims. The code identifies the setting where the service was furnished, such as an office, hospital outpatient department, emergency room, skilled nursing facility, laboratory, or telehealth location.

This lookup includes the assigned codes in the CMS Place of Service code set and uses shortened descriptions for quick billing reference. CMS currently identifies its published POS database as updated May 2, 2024; the CMS code-set webpage was last modified February 17, 2026. See the official CMS Place of Service Code Set for the source descriptions and updates.

Where does the POS code go on a CMS-1500?

On a CMS-1500 paper claim, the Place of Service code is entered for each service line in Box 24B. In an 837P electronic professional claim, the service location and related claim data are represented electronically. Payer rules determine which POS is appropriate for the actual service.

Telehealth codes 02 and 10

POS 02 is used for telehealth provided when the patient is somewhere other than the patient’s home. POS 10 is used when telehealth is provided while the patient is in the patient’s home. Always confirm the current payer policy and service-specific billing requirements.
