Before you start
- The NPI is a 10-digit identifier assigned through the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System.
- A TIN may be an EIN or SSN depending on the entity and context.
- A rendering individual can have an NPI while payments and tax reporting are associated with an organization's TIN and NPI.
NPI: provider identity
The NPI is a 10-digit identifier assigned through the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System. Individual and organizational providers can have NPIs.
TIN: tax identity
A TIN may be an EIN or SSN depending on the entity and context. Payers use tax information for enrollment, reporting, and matching processes.
Billing relationships matter
A rendering individual can have an NPI while payments and tax reporting are associated with an organization's TIN and NPI. Use the payer's enrollment configuration rather than guessing.
Keep identifiers in their proper roles
- NPI is a 10-digit provider identifier used in HIPAA standard transactions; TIN is a tax identifier used for tax/business identity.
- Do not substitute one for the other when a payer asks for a specific identifier.
- Verify the billing relationship, provider role, NPI, TIN, taxonomy, and enrollment data as separate pieces of the claim setup.
Why both identifiers can appear in one billing workflow
A group practice can have an organizational NPI and TIN while individual clinicians have their own NPIs. The claim and enrollment context determines which provider/entity is being identified in each field. Keep a controlled provider setup record that separates NPI, TIN/EIN, taxonomy, payer IDs, legal business name, and rendering/billing roles. This makes it easier to update one identifier without accidentally replacing another.
